Do You Need Root Canal Treatment?

There are several different signs that can give you an idea of whether or not you may require root canal treatment. Some of the most common ones we see include:

  • A severe toothache or pain in a tooth that doesn’t go away.
  • Whenever you eat, the pressure from chewing is uncomfortable or painful.
  • Your gums are swollen around the affected tooth.
  • There’s a pimple-like bump on the gums near the affected tooth.
  • Your jaw is swollen due to pus in the pimple-like bump that hasn’t drained.
  • A tooth is discolored or has darkened.
  • A large cavity has made way for bacteria to enter the inner chamber of the tooth.

The Root Canal Treatment Process

Root canals take place over the course of two appointments. First, Dr. Q will create a window into the top of the infected tooth. This will allow him to remove the infected pulp within the chamber, which is a collection of damaged nerves and tissue, which is actually the source of the pain of the infection. Once the inner chamber is sanitized and the pulp has been removed, he will restore the tooth’s structure with a substance called gutta percha. Then, at the second appointment, he will place a customized dental crown over the top of the treated tooth for extra protection.
